How noisy are wind turbines?

Wind turbines are not noisy. It is possible to stand underneath a turbine and hold a conversation without having to raise your voice. The DTI has conducted studies of noise emissions from turbines and found them to be “quieter than the wind itself” The FutureWind ZZ250 turbine uses a direct drive generator, meaning no gearbox and gearboxes were the source of noise in first generation turbines.
