Can wind contribute significantly to electricity production?

By the Autumn of 2002 more than 20,000 megawatts of wind power were on line in Europe, sufficient to power the average domestic electricity consumption of ten million households. World-wide 24,000 MW have been installed. This is equivalent to the amount of nuclear power installed world-wide by 1971. Wind energy is significant.
